R-07 Practical Guide Field Recordists

Do you worry about any of these things?

  • I need to capture a natural-sounding stereo image in my recordings.
  • Once I’ve placed my recorder in the best position, it’s hard to operate the device.
  • How can I be sure my audio is being recorded properly?
  • How can I check the sound of my recordings when I’m on location?
  • How do I capture the most immersive listening experience possible?

Natural Stereo Sound

The R-07’s built-in stereo mic is omnidirectional, meaning that it picks up sounds from all around. This allows you to capture outdoor sounds with natural spaciousness and realistic location details.

Full Remote Control

Thanks to the R-07’s Bluetooth connectivity and dedicated remote-control app, you can both control and monitor the unit wirelessly right from your director’s chair.

Useful Tools for Cleaner Recordings

The R-07 has a convenient low-cut function that filters out unnecessary low-frequency sounds on the mic input for cleaner field recordings. Three different settings are available to determine how much low-frequency content to cut, and your setting can be saved in a scene for quick recall later. And if you have problems with wind noise when recording outdoors, using the low-cut filter in conjunction with the optional R07-WS windscreen can greatly reduce them. While the windscreen is mounted on the R-07, you can easily control the recorder from R-07 Remote app.

Handy Features for Efficient Workflow

When recording Foley effects and nature sounds, it might take some time before the sound you need to capture actually happens. With the R-07’s Auto Rec Start function, your recording won’t start until a specified amount of time has elapsed, or until the input signal hits a level that you’ve predetermined. You might also want to enable the Pre-Rec function, which captures two seconds of audio before the red light goes on to ensure a complete recording even if the start is a just a little late. It’s also possible to mark and split your recordings as you go, making it easier to sort and organize them all later.

Check Recordings Instantly

You can play back recordings straight from the R-07 itself using its built-in speaker, or listen with either wired or wireless headphones. If you need a little more volume or want to listen with a group, you can even pair it wirelessly with any standard Bluetooth speaker system.

Binaural Sound Puts Your Listeners in the Action

The optional CS-10EM is a great companion for field recording with the R-07. It provides binaural recording combined with convenient in-ear monitoring, perfect for capturing immersive soundtracks with a continual sense of movement and space. Simply wear the microphone-equipped earphones and capture everything you hear, then listen back instantly to enjoy ultra-realistic binaural sound.

Basic Recording Procedure

Field Recording

  • 1. For the quickest setup, press SCENE and select “Field.” It’s also possible to set the recording parameters manually if you prefer.
  • 2. Place the R-07 in the desired position.
  • 3. Press the REHEARSAL button and point the R-07 at the source to automatically set the optimum recording level.
  • 4. Start recording.

Tips:

  • When determining the best location for the R-07’s mic, imagine how you want the recording to sound when accompanied by the video image. For example, you might want to capture the murmuring of a brook on the right and the twittering of birds on the left.
  • If low-frequency noise is a concern, engage the low-cut function. Three different settings are available, and you can save your selection along with a scene memory.
