R-07 Practical Guide Band and Orchestra

Do you worry about any of these things?

  • Finding the best mic position is difficult.
  • Once I’ve found the best mic position, it’s hard to operate the device.
  • How can I make sure the audio is being recorded properly?
  • I don’t understand about signal-to-noise ratio or setting gain levels.
  • What else do I need to make great-sounding recordings?

Stand Mount Support for Optimum Positioning

The R-07 has a built-in thread mount, allowing you to attach the optional OP-MSA1 adaptor and mount the recorder on a mic stand. This gives you the most flexibility to place the R-07 in the ideal recording position.

Hands-Free Operation

After setting the R-07 in the best position, you can use the remote control app to control and monitor recording operations from wherever you are—the stage wings, audience seating areas, or even your stage location if you’re performing in the ensemble.

Wireless Playback with Standard Bluetooth Speakers

After capturing a recording, you can easily play it back through a Bluetooth speaker for wireless listening with the entire group.

Clean and Clear Recordings Every Time

The ideal recording level for any situation can be set automatically using the rehearsal feature, which is easily accessed with a dedicated button on the top panel. But when it comes to the main event, the actual performance might be a little louder than it was in rehearsal, introducing the potential for distortion. For added insurance, you can engage the R-07’s audio limiter, and also simultaneously capture a backup recording at a slightly reduced level.

Basic Recording Procedure

Band Rehearsal

  • 1. For the quickest setup, press SCENE and select “Loud Practice.” It’s also possible to set the recording parameters manually if you prefer.
  • 2. Place the R-07 in the desired position.
  • 3. As the group plays, press the REHEARSAL button to automatically set the optimum recording level.
  • 4. Start recording.

Tips:

  • In a rehearsal situation, the instruments are typically placed in various locations in the room so that the group members can hear and see each other well. Place the R-07 in the middle and adjust its position to capture the best balance between all the performers.
  • Table height is a good place to start, and will likely achieve the best balance of bass and treble in the sound. To increase fullness, lower the R-07. To achieve a more clear and open sound, raise the R-07.
  • If everyone in the band is connected to a central audio mixer via microphones and direct lines, you can alternately capture a direct feed by connecting the mixer’s output to the R-07’s MIC/AUX IN jack.

Orchestra/Acoustic Ensemble Performance

  • 1. For the quickest setup, press SCENE and select “Instrument.” It’s also possible to set the recording parameters manually if you prefer.
  • 2. Place the R-07 in the desired position.
  • 3. As the ensemble plays, press the REHEARSAL button to automatically set the optimum recording level.
  • 4. Start recording.

Tips:

  • Position the R-07’s microphone so that it faces the center of the orchestra/ensemble from the audience side.
  • To capture the hall resonance and audience reaction along with the performance, position the R-07 in a high position in the center of the audience seating.
  • For a more brilliant, well-defined sound, place the R-07 closer to the ensemble (such as behind the conductor).

High-Volume Band Performance with a PA System

  • 1. For the quickest setup, press SCENE and select “Loud Live.” It’s also possible to set the recording parameters manually if you prefer.
  • 2. Place the R-07 in the desired position.
  • 3. As the group plays, press the REHEARSAL button to automatically set the optimum recording level.
  • 4. Start recording.

Tips:

  • Position the R-07’s microphone in a high position in the center of the audience seating. The goal is to capture the best balance of the raw instrument sound from the stage and the amplified sound coming through the PA system.
  • If everyone in the band is connected to a central audio mixer via microphones and direct lines, you can alternately capture a direct feed by connecting the mixer’s output to the R-07’s MIC/AUX IN jack.
