XP-10: System Exclusive Messages for Arabic Scale Tuning

Tags: xp-10
In most western types of music, traditional instruments utilize a tuning system
based upon a scale of 12 notes. The frequency (or pitch) of each of these notes
is based upon a mathematical calculation of a series of frequency multiples by
the famous mathematician Pythagoras and is often referred to as standard or
"equal" temperament. Many Middle Eastern and Far eastern countries have their
own unique tuning systems. To many in western culture, this different type of
temperament (or tuning) may sound strange or "out of tune," due to the fact
that western culture is more accustomed to "equal" temperament. Incorporating
altered types of tunings into your compositions can give them a very authentic,
ethnic flavor which may introduce additional creative options. One of the more
popular tuning systems is the Arabic scale tuning. Playing an Arabic scale with
a traditional solo instrument (such as a santur), will sound most authentic
when utilizing Arabic scale tuning. Nearly all GS devices have the ability to
fine tune individual notes within the 12 note scale. With many types of
external sequencers, it is possible to send a string of system exclusive
messages to your GS device to set one or more parts to Arabic scale tuning
temperament. Use the following system exclusive messages to set a particular
part (solo instrument) to utilize Arabic scales tuning:
