VS-1680, VS-1880, VS-1824, VS-1824CD: Connecting Three VS-1680/1880/1824 Recorders Together

The following article will guide you through connecting three VS-1680/1880/1824CD workstations together so that the first recorder will control the second and third units. In addition, all audio from the 2nd and 3rd units will be output through the first recorder.

 

MIDI CONNECTIONS

  1. Connect the MIDI OUT of the 1st unit (Master) to the MIDI IN of the 2nd unit (Slave 1).

  2. Connect the MIDI OUT of the 2nd unit (Slave 1) to the MIDI IN of the 3rd unit (Slave 2).

 

AUDIO CONNECTIONS

  1. Connect the RCA outputs 1 and 2 of the 2nd unit (Slave 1) to the ¼” inputs 5 and 6 of the 1st unit (Master).

  2. Connect the RCA outputs 1 and 2 of the 3rd unit (Slave 2) to the ¼” inputs 7 and 8 of the 1st unit (Master).
    Note: This will require two stereo adapter cables. Each stereo cable will have two rca connectors on one side and two ¼” connectors on the other side of the cable.

MASTER (1ST UNIT) SETTINGS

  1. Hold SHIFT and then press F5 for SYSTEM menu.

  2. Press F4[MIDI]. If MIDI is not displayed over F4, press PAGE, then F4[MIDI].

  3. Use the CURSOR buttons and the TIME/VALUE dial to set "MIDI THRU" to "OUT".

  4. Set "MMC" to "MASTER".

  5. Press F6[EXIT], then F6 again to go into the SYNC parameter page.

  6. Set "SYNC SOURCE" to "INT".

  7. Set "SYNC Gen." to "MTC".

  8. Set "SYNC MTC TYPE" to "30".

  9. Press the PLAY/DISPLAY button to return to the main screen.

  10. Press the FADER/MUTE button above the red MASTER volume fader until “IN” is illuminated. The volume faders are not assigned to be input faders.
    NOTE: Be sure that “IN” is illuminated and not “TR”.

  11. Bring down the volume sliders of faders 5 through 8 and then bring them up to 0.

    You may now connect headphones or speakers to ouputs 1/2 or outputs 3/4.

 

SLAVE 1 (2ND UNIT) SETTINGS

  1. Hold SHIFT and then press F5 for SYSTEM menu.

  2. Press F4[MIDI]. If MIDI is not displayed over F4, press PAGE, then F4[MIDI].

  3. Use the CURSOR buttons and the TIME/VALUE dial to set "MIDI THRU" to "THRU".

  4. Set "MMC" to "SLAVE".

  5. Press F6[EXIT], then F6 again to go into the SYNC parameter page.

  6. Set "SYNC SOURCE" to "EXT".

  7. Set "SYNC MTC TYPE" to "30".

  8. Press the PLAY/DISPLAY button to return to the main screen.

  9. Press the PLAY button. The button will begin flashing and will wait for a sync signal from the first unit (Master).

 

SLAVE 2 (3RD UNIT) SETTINGS

  1. Hold SHIFT and then press F5 for SYSTEM menu.

  2. Press F4[MIDI]. If MIDI is not displayed over F4, press PAGE, then F4[MIDI].

  3. Set "MMC" to "SLAVE".

  4. Press F6[EXIT], then F6 again to go into the SYNC parameter page.

  5. Set "SYNC SOURCE" to "EXT".

  6. Set "SYNC MTC TYPE" to "30".

  7. Press the PLAY/DISPLAY button to return to the main screen.

  8. Press the PLAY button. The button will begin flashing and will wait for a sync signal from the first unit (Master).

 

That’s it! When you press PLAY on the first unit (Master), the second unit (Slave 1) and third unit (Slave 2) will begin playing.

  • Audio from Slave 1 will be input into the Master’s inputs 5 and 6.

  • Audio from Slave 2 will be input into the Master’s inputs 7 and 8.
