About Using the REAC System

The S-4000 Digital Snake System incorporates the REAC (Roland Ethernet Audio Communication) interface. REAC is based on the Ethernet technology used in computer networks. As such, REAC device connections are made with Cat5e cable.

As in any Cat5e digital data system, the quality and condition of the transmission cable is critical for accurate data transfer and the secure operation of the overall system. For this reason, you should take all normal precautions and follow all standard rules that pertain to any standard Ethernet network cabling when installing or using an S-4000 Digital Snake System.

To avoid any loss of audio data, please check the following:

About the REAC Cable
  • The cable used for the REAC connection MUST COMPLY WITH ALL Cat5e (Enhanced Category 5) REGULATIONS.
  • The maximum length of one cable SHOULD NOT EXCEED 100 meters.
  • DO NOT USE a cable that has excessive wear or tear on its shield.
  • If the cable is going to be used for live sound reinforcement or any other exposed environment, be sure that the cable and its jacketing have been rated for this kind of use. You should also inspect the cable frequently to check for wear and tear.
  • DO NOT BEND THE CABLE beyond its rated capability.
  • When bundling cables, DO NOT DAMAGE OR TEAR THE CABLE'S SHIELDING.

Important Notes for making your own REAC Cables

If you make your own REAC cables, please consider the following important points:
  • YOU SHOULD USE reliable RJ-45 connectors that comply with all Cat5e regulations.
  • YOU SHOULD NOT violate the integrity of the cable, including the Cat5e regulation twists of the cable pairs.

Requirements for using an Ethernet switching hub in a REAC system

Ethernet switches can be used in an S-4000 System to extend the length of a cable run or for splitting the Master Unit's source audio. To be used in a REAC system, an Ethernet switching hub must meet the following requirements:
  • Its transmission speed must be 1000BASE-T (IEEE802.3ab, Gigabit Ethernet) and also support 100BASE-TX (IEEE802.3u).
  • It must support Bi-directional (full-duplex) communication.
  • DO NOT USE more than four (4) switching hubs for extending the length of one cable run.
  • Please be sure that the REAC cable connectors are tightly connected to the terminals of the switching hubs.

ROLAND'S SOLE RESPONSIBILITY TO USER SHALL BE LIMITED TO ROLAND'S OBLIGATIONS UNDER THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY FOR THE S-4000 SYSTEM.
