This system program updates the R-44 system program to the latest version 1.21.

How to know the version
Before you start, check the system program version of your R-44.
  1. Turn R-44 power off.
  2. Hold down [DISP] and [↓](Down Cursor Button) and press [POWER] to switch on the power.
    Continue holding down [DISP] and [↓] until the version is displayed.
And then check the version of [MAIN] on the display of your R-44. After checking the version, press [POWER] to switch off the power.
* Version 1.20 or later does not require this update.
* You can update from any versions.

  • Automatic setting of input senses (Auto Sens)
    The optimal input level for the audio that is currently being input is automatically detected and the set value is displayed.
  • Playlist Function
    A project is played in order of a playlist in an SD memory card.
  • Meter Zoom
    The level meters can be displayed in a magnified view.

[BUG FIX]
  • On Windows 7, MacOS X v10.6 or later, R-44 cannot communicate with a computer via USB after it wakes up from sleep state.

[IMPROVEMENT]
  • Got compatible with the latest BWF(Broadcast Wave Format) as much as possible while keeping compatibility with previously recorded files.
[BUG FIX]
  • At "MS Mic" Effect, wide control on ch.3 - ch.4 is unable and it causes no sound input for the ch.4.
  • No effect on Pre-Rec part of the sound.
  • Shutdown operation takes time such as 30sec when the SD card was locked.

  • Compatibility improved with .WAV files made by LOGIC from Apple.
  • Got compatible with 4-ch surround or WaveFormatExtensible files made by applications such as SONAR from Cakewalk.
  • Shorter gap between recording start timing of two units in synchronized recording by the units linked each other through CTRL-SYNC connectors.
[BUG FIX]
  • Issues of compatibility with SD Cards.
  • Counter digits might jump back for few seconds within few seconds of recording which is Pre-Rec activated.
  • Signals might be easily distorted especially by negative values set at the Graphic EQ.
  • Incorrect frequency response by negative values set at MID of "3 Band EQ" in 88.2/96kHz sampling rate modes.


What you will need to update your R-44
  • R-44
  • A USB cable included in a R-44
  • A SD Memory Card
    * The SD memory card is needed to be formatted on a R-44 and have 2MB or more free space.
  • A computer with a USB connector


Caution when performing the update
  • Never apply this update data to any product other than the R-44. This update data may destroy the data or system program of other products.
  • Be sure to power the unit using the AC adaptor. Executing the update while running on only battery power may cause the update to fail and result in incorrect operation if the batteries go dead before the update finishes.
  • Never power-off your R-44 while the update is in progress!
    If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the R-44 won’t be able to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact Roland service center near you if this occurs.
  • We regret that we are unable to answer questions regarding the update procedure using this system program. Please perform the update responsibly, following the directions given in this document.


Getting the update file
  • Please open/extract the downloaded "r44_sys_v121.zip" file on your computer to get the update folder named "r44_update" in the "r44_sys_v121.zip" folder.


Procedure for the update
  • Important Notes on User Data
    Performing a system update resets the System Settings to their factory defaults. The R-44 has no feature for backing up the System Settings. Back up the System Settings by noting them down in writing.
    * For detailed information about the System Settings, refer to the Owner's Manual.
  • Never power-off your R-44 while the update is in progress.
  • Be sure to power the unit using the AC adaptor. Executing the update while running on only battery power may cause the update to fail and result in incorrect operation if the batteries go dead before the update finishes.
  1. Turn R-44 power off.
  2. Insert the SD memory card to the R-44.
  3. Turn R-44 power on.
  4. Start your computer then connect the R-44 to the computer by using a USB cable.
    -> The computer detects the R-44.
  5. Copy the extracted folder "r44_update" onto the root directory of the R-44.
    If the folder "r44_update" has already existed on the SD memory card, delete the folder from the SD memory card before copying.
  6. Un-mount the R-44 through the correct procedure, then disconnect from the computer.
    [Windows]
    Use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows task tray to un-mount the R-44. And then disconnect the USB cable that's between the R-44 and your computer.
    [Macintosh]
    Drag the Drive icon of the R-44 into the trash in the dock. And then disconnect the USB cable that’s between the R-44 and your computer.
  7. Push the [POWER] button to turn the R-44 power off.
  8. Turn the R-44 power on with pushing the [REPEAT] and [DISP] buttons.
    * Continue holding down the [REPEAT] and [DISP] buttons until the screen is displayed.
  9. When the R-44 finds the update file, the following screen will be appeared. (This is an example.)
    Program Update

    MAIN: 1.10 -> 1.21


    Update, Push [ENTER]
    • The current version number is indicated at "MAIN: 1.10".
    • If this shows the latest version ("MAIN: 1.20" or later), there’s no need to update your R-44. Push the [POWER] button to turn the R-44 power off.
    • When the following messages are displayed, turn the R-44 power off and then go back to the previous procedure to check the SD memory card and the update file.
      • "NO CARD!!": The R-44 can't find the SD memory card.
      • "NO FILE!!": The R-44 can't find the update file on the SD memory card.
  10. Push the [ENTER] button.
    -> Update processing will be carried out automatically.
    You will take about twenty seconds to update.

    CAUTION!!
    While update processing, do not turn the R-44 power off and do not un-mount the SD memory card.
  11. When the update processing is completed, the [PLAY] button will light up.
  12. Push the [POWER] button to turn the R-44 power off.

Please verify the version number "1.21" with the procedure described in "How to know the version" part of this document.
After you perform the update, you must delete the update file from the SD memory card for the normal usage.
