UpdatesFP-4 system program ver. 1.04

This system program is to update the FP-4 to the most recent version 1.04.

Products:FP-4

-----
* Checking the version
--- Check the version before you download ---
While holding down [+] and [-], turn the power on. The version number will appear.
When you have finished checking the version, turn the power off.
* If the indication is "1.04" or higher, you don't need to perform this update.

-----
* Changes
[ → Ver. 1.04]
The damper resonance effect has been improved. We have fixed the problem that had caused the
sympathetic resonance to be louder than necessary when certain keys (such as G#2) were played.

-----
* Items required for the update
You'll need the following items in order to install the system program into the FP-4.
- The FP-4 itself
- A computer equipped with a USB connector (OS: Windows Vista or XP)
- USB cable
- Update tool (Simple SMF player)
UpdSMF (download: Windows version)
UpdSMF (download: MacOS X version)

-----
* Precautions concerning the update procedure
- If this update is performed successfully, the settings, registrations, and songs stored in the
FP-4 will not be lost. However, as a safeguard against unexpected problems, we recommend that you
make a note of these settings or store them on your computer before you proceed with the update.
- Stored settings (refer to p. 128 in the Owner's Manual, and make a note of the settings)
- Registrations (Owner's Manual; p. 104, 105)
- Songs stored in internal memory (Owner's Manual; p. 96, 97, 102)
- Never turn off the power while the installation is being performed. Doing so may damage the
system, rendering it unusable. If this occurs, please contact your dealer or a Roland service center.
- If you do not have access to facilities for performing the update, Roland will perform the update
for a fee. Please contact your dealer or a Roland service center.
- We regret that we are unable to answer questions regarding the installation procedure for this
system program. Please perform this procedure on your own responsibility according to the
instructions provided here.

-----
* Preparations
- Install the "Roland Digital Piano driver" in your computer.
You can obtain the driver from the following location. For the installation procedure, refer to the
Readme_E.htm file included with the driver.
[Note] You'll need to restart your computer during the process of installing the "Roland Digital
Piano driver" in your computer. Also, when you connect the FP-4 during the installation process,
you will need to change the USB driver setting of the FP-4 itself to "Original." Refer to Owner's
Manual; p. 98.

-----
* Download and extract the compressed file
[Windows users]
Download FP4_v104.zip and the simple SMF player UpdSMF.EXE (download: Windows version) to the
desired folder on your computer.
The downloaded files are compressed archive files, so double-click each icon in Explorer to extract
the files.
When extraction is completed, you will see an FP4_v104 folder containing the fp4_v104.mid file
(system program), and UpdSMF.EXE.

Place the update tool (UpdSMF) and the update file (fp4_v104.mid) in the same folder on your computer.

[Macintosh users]
Download FP4_104.sit and the simple SMF player UpdSMF_10.tar.gz (download: MacOS X version) to the
desired folder on your computer.
The downloaded files are a Stuffit archive file and a self-expanding compressed file, so after
downloading them you'll need to use Stuffit Expander or the like to extract the files. When
extraction is completed, you will see an FP4_v104 folder containing the fp4_v104.mid file (system
program) and an UpdSMF_10 folder containing UpdSMF.

Place the update tool (UpdSMF) and the update file (fp4_v104.mid) in the same folder on your computer.

-----
* Update procedure
Follow the procedure described below to install the extracted system program into the FP-4.
1. Turn your computer on.

2. After your computer has started up, use a USB cable to connect the FP-4 to your computer.

3. While holding down Track [1] and [Rec], turn the FP-4's power on. Its display will indicate
"rdy" (ready).
* If the display does not indicate "rdy," there is a problem with the USB connection between your
computer and the FP-4.
Turn off the power of the FP-4, make settings on your computer once again as described in the
Roland Digital Piano driver help, and then repeat the procedure from step 3.
* If you decide to abort the update at this point, turn off the power of the FP-4.

4. Start up the update tool (UpdSMF) and make the following settings.
- [MIDI OUT Device]: choose Roland Digital Piano
- [SMF Path]: specify the path for the update SMF (the name of the folder that contains the
fp4_v104.mid file)
- Press [Scan SMF] and verify that fp4_v104.mid is displayed.

5. Click [Send]. When data transmission begins, the FP-4 will indicate "rcv" (receive).

6. When data transmission is completed, a completion message will appear in the screen of the
computer. Then, the process of writing the data into the FP-4's ROM will begin. The indication will
change from 0 to 100, and when the "End" indication appears, writing is complete.
[Note]
Don't turn off the power of the FP-4 while the data is being written into ROM (from the 0
indication until End appears). Doing so will destroy the ROM image, and in the worst case, may
render the main board irrecoverable.

7. Turn off the power of the FP-4.
