UpdatesDR-880 System Program Updater Ver. 2.00

After executing WRITE procedure for approximately 500 times, the message - "User data is damaged. Factory Reset" will appear when turning on the DR-880's power, and the data stored in the user memory will be lost. This occurs when the total number of WRITE procedure exceeds 500 times, and it goes the same even if the power is turned off between times. This is caused by the DR-880's system software, and by upgrading it, the above problem will be solved.

Factory Reset" will appear when turning on the DR-880's power, and the data stored in the user memory will be lost. This occurs when the total number of WRITE procedure exceeds 500 times, and it goes the same even if the power is turned off between times.
This is caused by the DR-880's system software, and by upgrading it, the above problem will be solved.

Checking the version

  1. Turn off the DR-880's power.
  2. Turn on the power while holding down the [EFFECT] button and [OUTPUT SETTING] button at the same time.
  3. The version will be shown on the display. Please check the number displayed in the "EXT" section. You will need to update the unit if "1.00" or "1.01" is shown here.

    *There is no need to update if the version is 2.00 or higher.
  4. Turn off the power.

Required items to update DR-880's firmware

- DR-880 - MIDI Sequencer that is capable of playing SMF
*Depending on the sequencer, it may not be able to playback large amount of system exclusive messages.
*Using the UpdSMF is recommended. For instructions, please read the readme.txt file inside the UpdSMF folder.

- USB-MIDI Interface (update via USB to MIDI) or MIDI Cable (update via MIDI to MIDI)
*The update via USB connector on the DR-880 is unavailable.

Precautions upon updating

Please DO NOT turn off the DR-880's power while update is in progress, or the system may be damaged and will not be able to function properly. In such case, contact the nearest Roland service center or the local dealer.

How to update the DR-880

Download and Extracting files

- Windows users:

Download DR880v200.zip to an appropriate folder.
It is a self-extracting file, so just double click the icon to extract data.
DR880v200 folder with 21 SMF data included, will appear when the extracting process ends.

- Macintosh users:

Download DR880v200.sit.hqx to an appropriate folder.
It is in StuffIt archives format, so extract data using utility software such as StuffIt Expander.

Update procedure

*Please DO NOT turn off the DR-880's power until the update process is finished.
*To make sure, backup your data stored in the user memory before updating the unit.
Refer to "Chapter 9 : Using MIDI - Transmitting a DR-880 bulk dump" or "Chapter 10 : Using USB - Backing up the DR-880's data" section in the owner's manual.

  1. First check if the DR-880's power is off. Then, connect the MIDI OUT of a MIDI sequencer (or the MIDI interface connected to a computer) and the DR-880's MIDI IN using a MIDI cable.
  2. Turn on the power while holding down the [SHIFT] button and [EDIT] button at the same time. "Flash-ROM Updater" message and the current version will appear on the display, when the DR-880 is ready to receive data.
  3. Playback all 21 SMFs (in the DR880v200 folder) in the numbered order. When the DR-880 is loading data, indicator on [FAVORITE 1] - [FAVORITE 4] button will light in order.
    *Playback the SMF in the following order.

    _0000020.mid
    _0000021.mid
  4. When the playback of all of the SMFs are finished, Check sum (a value to check if the program has been written correctly) will be displayed along with the message -"Completed." The program has correctly been updated if the following message appears.

    "sum(prg2)0x5B1A"

    *To restore backup data, refer to "Chapter 9 : Using MIDI - Receiving a bulk dump back to the DR-880" or "Chapter 10 : Using USB - Reading backup data back into theDR-880 from the computer (Recover)" section in the owner's manual.

Example Using UpdSMF

Windows

  • UpdSMF is a simple SMF player for Windows. It is designed for updating procedure only, and not suitable for playing ordinary music SMF.
  • Please install MIDI driver to your computer in advance, in order to send MIDI messages. Refer to the manual of the driver(or application) upon installation.

Macintosh

  • UpdSMF is a simple SMF player for MacOS 8.6 or higher. It is designed for updating procedure only, and not suitable for playing ordinary music SMF.
  • The update will not complete successfully, if your computer turns to sleep mode during the update procedure.
  • Prevent your computer falling asleep, going to System Preference -> Energy Saver, then set to Never Sleep.
  • Please install OMS as a MIDI driver to your computer in advance.

Operation

  1. Double click the UpdSMF icon.
  2. Select "MIDI Out Device."
  3. [ Windows ]
    For "SMF Path" section, select the folder which update SMF has been extracted. You can also search for folder by pressing the "Path" button.
    [ Macintosh ]
    For "SMF Folder" section, select the folder which update SMF has been extracted. You can also search for folder by pressing "Path" button.
  4. Press "Scan SMF" button. *This procedure is not necessary in Macintosh.
  5. Remove any unnecessary SMF data for an update, since the UpdSMF plays all SMFs in the selected folder.
  6. Press "Send" button, and the selected SMFs will be played in order of its number.
