How to know the version
Before you start, check the system program version of your A-49.
  1. While holding down [ FUNCTION ], [ TRANSPOSE ], and [ OCTAVE + ], connect the USB COMPUTER connector on the rear panel to a USB connector on the computer.
  2. The pattern in which the four buttons of S1, S2, - and + light up and go dark indicates the version, as shown in the following table.

  3. Disconnect the USB cable.
* If this shows the latest version, there’s no need to update your A-49.

  • Bus-powered operation from the front USB connector of the INTEGRA-7 is available.
    * The front USB connector of the INTEGRA-7 supplies power only. The MIDI signal cannot be transmitted. You must connect the MIDI OUT connector of the A-49 and the MIDI IN connector of the INTEGRA-7 using a MIDI cable for play.


What you will need to update your A-49
Caution when performing the update
  • If you update on the normal mode of A-49 against the correct procedrue, this update data may destroy the system program.
  • Never power-off your A-49 while the update is in progress!
    If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the A-49 won’t be able to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact Roland service center near you if this occurs.
  • We regret that we are unable to answer questions regarding the update procedure using this system program. Please perform the update responsibly, following the directions given in this document.

Getting the update file
Please open/extract the downloaded "a49_sys_v140.zip" file on your computer to get the update files named "_0000001.mid" in the "a49_sys_v140" folder.


Procedure for the update
  1. While holding down [ TRANSPOSE ] and [ OCTAVE + ], connect the USB COMPUTER connector on the rear panel to a USB connector on the computer.
    OCTAVE + flashes.
  2. Double-click "UpdSMF" displayed on the screen to start the UpdSMF.
  3. Set MIDI Out Device to A Series Keyboard.
  4. Click [ Path ] (click [ Select... ] for Mac) on "UpdSMF" and specify the location where the update file (_0000001.mid) is from SMF Path (SMF Folder for Mac). Then, click the [ OK ] button.
  5. Click [ Scan SMF ] (unnecessary for Mac) to check that the update file (_0000001.mid) is displayed in the file list.
  6. Click Send.
    Sending of the update program starts. After about 2 minute, the update finishes, and [ OCTAVE + ] and the octave indicator on the A-49 flash in alternation.
  7. Click [ OK ] on the Send SMF/Complete dialog box (the Complete Update dialog box for Mac) of "UpdSMF".
  8. Click [ Exit ] (click [ Quit ] for Mac) of the "UpdSMF" to exit "UpdSMFJ".
  9. Detach the USB cable, then without pressing any buttons, reattach it. The unit starts up in the normal mode.
    * If the update fails, the unit starts up in the Update mode instead of the normal mode.
  10. Execute a factory reset.
    1. Press FUNCTION.
    2. At the keyboard, press the key labeled FACT RESET.
    3. At the keyboard, press the key labeled ENTER.
      The factory reset is executed, and parameters that have been set in the Function mode are reset to their factory-default values.


Use A-49 connecting INTEGRA-7
You can use the A-49 bus-powered from the INTEGRA-7. Configure the following setting.
* The front USB connector of the INTEGRA-7 supplies power only. The MIDI signal cannot be transmitted. You must connect the MIDI OUT connector of the A-49 and the MIDI IN connector of the INTEGRA-7 using a MIDI cable for play.

  1. Power on the INTEGRA-7.
  2. Connect the MIDI OUT connector of the A-49 and the MIDI IN connector of the INTEGRA-7 with a MIDI cable.
  3. While holding down [FUNCTION], [PITCH] and [ASSIGN] of the A-49, connect the USB connector on the front panel of the INTEGRA-7 and the A-49 with a USB cable.
  4. The POWER indicator of the A-49 lights, and the A-49 starts up.
When you power on the INTEGRA-7, the A-49 is powered on simultaneously, and thus you can operate them in cooperation.
By turning the operation mode to SuperNATURAL mode by pressing the SuperNATURAL button on the A-49 after the A-49 has started up, you can control and play the SuperNATURAL sound of the INTEGRA-7 more precisely.
* After the above setting, you can use the A-49 as usual by connecting the A-49 to a personal computer.
