SP-404SX / Behind the Scenes

Roland joined forces with DJKENTARO at a special photo shoot for the SP-404SX,
commemorating the shipment of over 300,000 SP-series units.
At the session, the world-famous DJ played with the Tokyo nightscape in the background.
What was the photo session like? Here's our report.

He first starts off by checking his gear. It's just a check but look at his fluid movement, his speed….

With the rehearsal done, it's time for the shoot.

What? A wall? Yes. We are in a photo studio. The nightscape in the background was shot separately.

Interviews take place between shots. We ask him about his next release.

The shoot proceeds … onto the hand-held shots. DJKENTARO designed the original costumes himself! If you're interested visit this link:

It's 6 pm and the session is over. Even with a packed schedule, he never looks displeased.

Now for the start of Part 2. We move to the roof of a condo in Mita, Minato-ku to get a shot of the Tokyo nightscape. This is a great location as it gives you a great view of Tokyo. FYI, this is what it looks like in the daytime.

After about three hours of holding flashlights, we are able to capture this great nightscape. We compose the images to complete the photo. A huge thank you to all involved!

SP-555 / Behind the Scenes

This is a photo shoot with DJKENTARO.
The interview was held early in the summer at a nondescript basement studio in Tokyo.
A large number of lights and DJ gear was brought into the studio
to create a club-like space for this shoot, where the producers aimed to
capture DJKENTARO's dynamic DJ performance.
This surrealistic photo session was set in a swirling world
created by mirror ball and laser effects. Here's a timeline of the session.

Serious DJ gear and lighting, adrenaline pumping . . . the studio has been completely transformed into a club.

The gear is set up and the rehearsal is done. Now it's time for the shoot. You can sense the excitement in the room.

Going all the way to make the shoot extra special. Phantasmagoric lighting elevates the mood.

There's a little bit of time for fun conversation between shots. DJKENTARO is easy going — a great person to hang with.

Here we are doing the interview. We covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

Signing his autograph for the SP-555 advertisement photo.

And he closes with peace. Thank you, DJKENTARIO, from all of us at Roland!
