Live

The V-Drums are packed with a variety of editing functions that drummers can use to create their own signature sound, as well as a professional-spec mixer and outputs that give drummers and audio technicians the tools they need to set up efficiently and deliver a compelling live performance.

Here we would like to introduce you to functions that are essential in real-world live performances.

GROUP FADERS
These faders give you instant volume control of the kick, snare, toms, hi-hat, cymbals, percussion, backing instruments, and the click sound. With the group faders, you can perform quick volume adjustments even while you're playing.

Drum Kit Chain
"Drum Kit Chain" allows you to step through the drum kits of your choice in the order you want. The TD-20X and TD-12 let you create and store 16 different chains of up to 32 steps each. You can specify the order in which you'll be using the drum kits in your live performance for instant switching from song to song.

MASTER COMP/EQ
You can make settings for the stereo compressor/limiter and three-band parametric EQ (equalizer) that are applied to the final stage of the master output. These settings can be used for individual kits and/or all kits.

OUTPUT Function
You can route the click track to an independent audio output, which means you can have it sent only to headphones, for example, or to the monitor engineer for custom click routings and volume settings for each musician onstage.

MIX EDIT Function
In addition to volume adjustment, the group faders can be used to instantly control parameters such as effect-send levels.


Recording

Recording drum sounds is a major undertaking. To properly record the sound of an acoustic drum set, you'll need a studio space large enough to accommodate it. Not only is professional studio space expensive to rent, you'll also need to hire the engineer.

Drum sounds are recorded using microphones, and you'll need someone with special knowledge and skills on the type of microphones to use, where to place them, what angle to place them at, and many other variables.

With the V-Drums, however, you can simulate a variety of professional recording situations easily, without a large studio space or engineer ― from the choice of material your drums are made of to the studio size and mic settings, effects, and mixes.

V-Edit Function Compatible Products： TD-20KX/TD-12KX V-Edit lets you customize the sound of your V-Drums to your preference. You can change the size of your cymbals, for example, as well as the size of the drum shells, giving you a great degree of freedom in creating your own custom drum set.

Shell material and depth For the shell material, you can choose among the three types: wood, steel, and brass. The body depth can be freely changed from piccolo to deep.

Sizzler installation The ride cymbal also supports sizzler installation. You can select between rivet and chain type according to preference. *TD-12 only supports rivet type.

Head material and tuning Head material can be one of three types: clear, coated, and pinstripe. Detailed tuning is also possible. *Pinstripe™ is a registered trademark of Remo Inc., U.S.A.

Beater selection Three beater materials are available: felt, wood, and plastic. *Only supported on the TD-20.

Muffling (mute) You can choose among four types of muting methods for the snare drum, including Tape and Doughnut, and also four types for the bass drum including Weight and Blanket. Precise overtone adjustment is also possible.

Snare resonance (buzz sound) The snare resonance (strainer sound) when playing the toms and bass drum can be adjusted in eight steps. This adds a unifying factor to the drum kit as a whole. *This feature on the TD-12 only supports on and off.

Cymbal size The size of each cymbal can be changed from one to 40 inches and sustain can also be adjusted.

Mic setting The mic position can be set for direct recording. Detailed sound customization is possible from the recording environment itself. *Only supported on the TD-20.

Practice

Whether you're a pro or amateur drummer, you need to practice. On the other hand, it's difficult to practice consistently unless it's fun to do and the conditions are right (not bothering your neighbors and surroundings, etc.). The V-Drums come with a broad range of training functions that help you hone your skills, and let you do so quietly at home.

Metronome Function Compatible Products： TD-20KX/TD-12KX/TD-9KX2/TD-9K2/TD-4KX2/TD-4K2 You can listen to the built-in metronome while you play. This is an essential function for learning to be a steady timekeeper. SCOPE Function Compatible Products： TD-9KX2/TD-9K2 The "SCOPE" function detects the timings at which you strike each pad — such as kick, snare, and hi-hat — and displays this information. This lets you view the quality of your performance, including timekeeping and phrasing, which is a great tool for training.

Quick Rec/Quick Play Function Compatible Products： TD-9KX2/TD-9K2/TD-4KX2/TD-4K2 The "QUICK REC/QUICK PLAY" function lets you record and play back your performance. This is a very handy feature for evaluating what you've played, and for going back and practicing the areas that need improvement. Coach Function Compatible Products： TD-4KX2/TD-4K2 This is a unique practice program that was designed to maximize your practice sessions. This function is suited for improving your ability to control speed, precision, stamina, as well as timekeeping.

Mix In
You can connect external sound modules such as mobile audio players and CD players to the MIX IN jack to jam with a variety of songs. You can also practice along with your favorite songs, and control the blend of the music and your drumming independently.

Headphones
V-Drums support headphones, which means you can practice at any time, day or night, without disturbing your surroundings.

DT-HD1 (Drums Tutor) The HD-1 Drum Tutor is a PC program for practicing drums with Roland's V-Drums Lite HD-1. It's designed to help people who have no drumming experience enjoy practicing at home.
